Convection RGB

Convection RGB (Severe Storms RGB)

Operationally produced by EUMETSAT

Application:

Monitoring convection in mature phase; detection of severe storms.

Convection RGB allows an easy monitoring of CB clouds and identification of small ice particles (potentially more severe – yellow) or large ice particles (potentially less severe – red).

Limitations:

Only daytime (especially at noon and close to the noon hours).

Pros and cons:

✓ Yellow colour in case of severe convection is a very good alert.

✓ Other information is limited.

X Also non-convective Lee clouds and clouds containing atmospheric dust can appear in yellow colour.

X In N, E and NE Europe not so applicable because of low satellite viewing angle.

X Night-time storms cannot be monitored.

Accessibility and Dissemination:

  1. 15 or 5-minute-data disseminated via EumetCast– level 1.5 data
  2. 6-hourly-images on EUMETSAT/EUMeTrain ePort Viewer
  3. 15-minutes-images on EUMETSAT website (select RGB Composites – Convection)
