In light of the global relevance of the conference themes, participants from all over the world are encouraged to attend.

In the focus this time will be satellite studies based on the new MTG instruments.

These are the conference topics (and tentative session titles):

  1. Satellite imager studies of convective storms and their environment
  2. Satellite sounder studies relevant to the formation of convective storms
  3. Storm electrification, lightning, microphysics, and space-based lightning observations
  4. Convective storm and tornado dynamics
  5. Radar and non-satellite remote sensing studies of storms
  6. Hail studies
  7. Floods, flash floods, and convective storms within extratropical, tropical and hybrid cyclones
  8. Nowcasting and forecasting of severe weather and forecaster training
  9. Numerical modelling, convection-allowing models, data assimilation, and machine learning
  10. Impact of storms on society, impact mitigation, and early warning systems

Venue

The 12th edition of the European Conference on Severe Storms will take place in the centre of the medieval city of Utrecht in TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht’s music hall (Vredenburgkade 11, 3511 WC Utrecht, see pin).
The ancient and historic city of Utrecht houses many buildings going back to the early Middle Ages.
Until it was overtaken by Amsterdam in the Dutch Golden age, Utrecht was the most important city in the Netherlands. It was and still is the See of the Archbishop of Utrecht, the most important Catholic leader in the Netherlands. The University of Utrecht is the largest in the Netherlands. One of the unique features of the city is the wharf system in its inner canals. Before the city was fully canalised, parts of the Rhine River flowed through the city center.
Utrecht’s iconic symbol is the Dom Tower, at a height of 112 metres the tallest church spire in the Netherlands. During a likely derecho event on 1 August 1674, the nave of the Dom church was literally blown away. The choir and the tower remained standing. The nave was never rebuilt and thus the Dom church is now only half a church. A long renovation project was completed very recently.

Lodging

Depending on your preferences and budget you can choose from a wide selection of hotels and other accomodation types, as Utrecht is a main tourist and business destination. “Special Conference Offers” quite frequently turn out to be fake. Therefore we refrain from such a list and kindly ask you to book via your preferred booking portal or directly with the hotel of your choice, which may be even better.

Travel to Utrecht

The ECSS2025 venue, TivoliVredenburg, is located right next to Utrecht’s central train station, in the heart of Utrecht. From Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) it’s only 30 minutes to Utrecht Centraal by direct train.
Public transport (like the train ticket from Schiphol Airport to Utrecht Central Station) can conveniently be paid for by debit or credit card. Just check in at the gate to the platform with a debit card (Maestro, V PAY) or credit card (Mastercard or Visa) and check out with the same card upon arrival at the destination station. This has recently been introduced and makes it really easy to take any train or bus.

Alternatively, you can buy a train ticket at the train station or order an e-ticket via the website. There are daily international trains from and to Brussels (2 hours), Cologne (2,5 hours), Frankfurt (3 hours), and Paris (3,5 hours). For more info, go to www.ns.nl or www.nsinternational.com (international).
