ESSL Research and Training Centre
Wiener Neustadt, Austria
* In the weeks of 21 June and 5 July, invited experts will participate in a Testbed programme with a strong focus on product evaluation and much less teaching. The programme in those weeks assumes you are a very experienced forecaster highly educated in forecasting convective storms. Please contact us if you would like to be considered for an invitation.
The ESSL Testbed 2021 will take place online using ESSL’s video-conferencing subscription.
What is new in 2021?
At this Testbed edition, a number of new products and will be evaluated. They will probably include:
- A number of improved Nowcasting products from DWD’s SINFONY project
- DWD’s ensemble NWP system ICON-D2-EPS
- ECMWF’s Extreme Forecast Index for CAPE and CAPESHEAR
- Ensemble model from ZAMG
- other products
For whom is the Testbed?
The goal of the Testbed is twofold. First, it caters forecasters who want to learn how to forecast severe convective storms using state-of-the-art forecasting tools. Second, it is a hands-on evaluation of new, sometimes experimental, forecast products. This means that both forecasters and developers of forecast products have an interest in the Testbed. In addition, other people having a background in meteorology are most welcome to participate as well. Still unsure, if the Testbed is the right activity for you? Try out our new Quiz!

Preparation
Testbed participants are provided with the Operations Plan and access to the ESSL Testbed Data Interface two weeks before the first testbed week. It is expected that each participant prepares for the Testbed with approximately one day of studying both the Operations Plan and getting acquainted with the Data Interface in the weeks before travelling to Wiener Neustadt.
A good preparation for the Testbed participation are our courses. Click here for more information.
At the end of the seminar participants will receive a participation certificate.
