ESSL Research and Training Centre

Because of the coronavirus outbreak, the ESSL Testbed will take place online this year. You can still register online for the regular Testbed weeks (starting on 15 June and 13 July), see below.

In the weeks of 22 June and 6 July, invited experts will participate on a Testbed programme with a strong focus on product evaluation and much less teaching.

What is new in 2020?

At this Testbed edition, a number of new products and will be evaluated. They include:

  • Konrad3D cell-tracking algorithm (DWD)
  • Convective Initiation product (NWC-SAF)
  • ICON-D2-EPS 20 member 2.2 km ensemble prediction system (DWD)
  • Rapid Developing Thunderstorm product (NWC-SAF)
  • STEPS ensemble nowcasting system for rain (DWD)
  • Convective Rain Rate (CRR) estimation product (NWC-SAF)
  • Instability indices and precipitable water (iSHAI) (NWC-SAF)

For whom is the Testbed?

The goal of the Testbed is twofold. First, it caters forecasters who want to learn how to forecast severe convective storms using state-of-the-art forecasting tools. Second, it is a hands-on evaluation of new, sometimes experimental, forecast products. This means that both forecasters and developers of forecast products have an interest in the Testbed. In addition, other people having a background in meteorology are most welcome to participate as well. Still unsure, if the Testbed is the right activity for you? Try out our new Quiz!
