Much progress has been made in forecasting severe thunderstorms during the past decades owing to an improved understanding of the governing processes, better remote-sensing capabilities, and increased computer power. The goal of this course is to provide the participants with a robust, up-to-date conceptual understanding of the governing processes and forecasting strategies.
The lectures target meteorologists with prior forecasting experience of mesoscale weather and prior exposure to the fundamentals of atmospheric dynamics. The lectures will cover the dynamics and prediction of severe thunderstorms and their attendant hazards, drawing upon the body of understanding obtained from decades of prior theoretical, observational, and numerical modeling studies, as well as the latest, state-of-the-art strategies in use today.
Topics include
- convection initiation,
- the influence of the environment on convective storm mode,
- isolated convective storms,
- convective systems,
- large hail, tornadoes,
- damaging straight-line winds,
- and ingredients-based forecasting.
In the morning sessions, we will cover the background material, and in the afternoon sessions there will be hands-on analysis and forecasting exercises using real-world cases.
Our senior trainer Dr. Tomáš Púčik will assist the participants during these exercises.
Lecture and exercise times, including a lunch break:
Mon 10:00 – 17:00
Tue 09:00 – 17:00
Wed 09:00 – 17:00
Thu 09:00 – 17:00
Fri 09:00 – 13:00, optional Testimonials 14:00 to 16:00
At the end of the course you will receive a participation certificate. We advise to take this seminar only after having taken the seminar “Forecasting Severe Convection” or comparable leading-edge trainings, as pre-knowledge of modern physical forecasting concepts is highly recommended. Still unsure? Our new Quiz can help you!
New – optional Testimonial
