The paper present severe storms of year 2001 in the light of satellite information received from meteorological satellites METEOSAT and NOAA. Especially the storms on 9. 07. 2001 in Gdansk and 23/24. 07. 2001 in southeast part of Poland were discussed due to their results in form of heavy flood. The case of strong damaging wind in Pulawy on 4. 08. 2001 was presented with use of satellite information for atmosphere sounding and wind retrieval. A few tornado cases of year 2001 were presented showing the limitation of satellite information with regard to discrimination between tornadoes and severe storms.

The possible application of satellite data for early recognition and monitoring of convective phenomena and heavy precipitation were discussed and presented on examples. Use of NOAA information was discussed taking into consideration the possible future use of SEVIRI instrument of MSG satellite. Due to sparse radar network in Poland, which do not cover the whole territory of the country, the satellite information is extremely valuable tool for forecasters in Poland. Use of the remote sensed information for analysis of the situation is of high importance especially in severe weather cases.
