The National Severe Storms Laboratory's contribution to severe weather warning improvement

Gregory J. Stumpf
National Severe Storms Laboratory - U.S.A.

The National Severe Storms Laboratory has played the primary role in the development and evaluation of severe weather applications for the United States WSR-88D radar. NSSL developed many of the primary detection algorithms for the radar, and is currently developing improvements to these algorithms. NSSL has also led the effort in the understanding of severe thunderstorms via its many field and basic research projects, as well as applied research projects understanding and relating severe weather to signatures detected in remotely-sensed observations.

We will share our vision for the future direction of this research, and how this new research and application development will aid the National Weather Service warning meteorologists to make effective warning decisions with all the information available to them. These will include our plans for multiple-sensor applications, upcoming field experiments, and upgrades to national radar systems.
